Dolls come in a variety of shapes, sizes and brands. Not all doll clothes are made for or will fit all dolls. When shopping for doll clothing it is important to know the size of your doll or know how to properly measure your doll to be sure that you select the appropriate sized clothing. Some brand name dolls may clearly indicate on the packaging or on the doll labeling the size of the doll so be sure to check that first. However, if you are unsure or want to double check the size of your doll here's what to do.
Measuring Tools & Preparations
First, you'll need to have a cloth tape measure. Find a flat surface like a table or counter top and lay your doll down as flat as possible to ensure and accurate measurement.
Measure the Height of Your Doll
Using the the cloth tape measure and beginning at the dolls feet (be sure to remove any shoes, hats, or other accessories that may add height to the doll), extend the cloth tape measure from the bottom of the dolls feet to her head. Record the height measurement. Most baby dolls are between 12" and 18".
Measure the Width of Your Doll's Chest
The next step is to determine the chest size of your doll. With your doll lying flat, use the cloth tape and measure the width of your doll's torso between her arms. This measurement should be made flat across the front of the doll. This is NOT a measurement of the circumference of the torso. Record this measurement. Most doll cloth chest widths vary from 6" for Barbie dolls to 13" for larger dolls.
Measure Your Doll's Waist
Once you have measure the doll's chest, the next step is to measure the doll's waist. Beginning in the front of the doll, hold one end of the measuring tape with one hand at the doll's belt area. Next, wrap the tape around the doll measuring the full circumference of the doll's waist. When taking this measurement the doll should not be clothed or be wearing any accessories that could interfere with the accuracy of the measurement. Record the measurement. Most doll cloth waist sizes range from 3.75" for a Barbie doll to 11"-12" for Bitty Babies and American Girl dolls.
Measure Your Doll's Hips
Depending on the doll, the hip measurement may be very similar to the waist measurement or may be quite different. For example, Barbie dolls have a very narrow waist with fuller hips. It is important to take this measurement as clothing for dolls with narrow waists and wider hips will not work well for other dolls. This measurement is taken in the same manner as the waist measurement. Typical hip measurements range from 5" for a Barbie doll to 12.25"-12.50" for Bitty Babies and American Girl dolls.
Following these simple steps will help ensure that you select properly fitting clothing for your doll.
